Hydro Jetting - High-Pressure Pipe Cleaning in Southeast Michigan
When snaking stops working and the same drain keeps backing up, it's time for a real cleaning - not another band-aid.
Professional hydro jetting at 1,500–4,000 PSI removes grease, scale, root debris, and mineral deposits from the full pipe wall - not just a hole punched through the center. Licensed Master Plumber serving Livonia, Dearborn Heights, Wayne County & all of Southeast Michigan.
What Is It
Hydro Jetting: The Most Thorough Drain Cleaning Available
Hydro jetting is high-pressure water cleaning. We insert a specialized nozzle into your drain line and deliver water at 1,500–4,000 PSI - enough force to scour the full interior circumference of your pipe from wall to wall. Grease that's been coating your cast-iron kitchen line for ten years. Scale built up at every joint. Root debris that snaking pushed around but couldn't remove. Hydro jetting removes all of it.
Here's the key difference: snaking punches a hole through the center of a blockage. The clog is gone, but the buildup on the pipe walls that caused it is still there - and it's still catching new material. Three months later, you're calling again. Hydro jetting cleans the pipe wall itself. When it's done, the pipe's interior diameter is close to what it was when it was new. That's why a professionally jetted line stays clean for years instead of months.
Before we ever run a jetting nozzle through your line, we do a camera inspection. This confirms the pipe is structurally sound enough to handle the pressure, identifies the type of buildup we’re dealing with, and lets me select the right PSI and nozzle configuration. We don't jet blind.
Signs You Need Hydro Jetting (Not Just Snaking)
- ✔ Same drain has been snaked twice this year and it's backing up again
- ✔ Multiple fixtures are draining slowly at the same time
- ✔ Grease odor coming from kitchen drain - years of FOG buildup
- ✔ Gurgling sounds from multiple drains when water runs
- ✔ Root intrusion confirmed in sewer camera inspection
- ✔ Commercial kitchen with recurring FOG accumulation
- ✔ Pre-sale drain cleaning for a home you're listing
Side-by-Side Comparison
Hydro Jetting vs. Drain Snaking
Step By Step
The Hydro Jetting Process
1. Camera Inspection
HD camera goes through the line first to confirm structural integrity and identify buildup type. No blind jetting.
2. Select PSI & Nozzle
Residential cast iron: 1,500–2,500 PSI. Root intrusion: rotary cutter nozzle. Commercial grease: 3,000–4,000 PSI.
3. Jet Downstream
Nozzle is fed to the downstream end and pulled upstream - so debris flushes toward the municipal connection, not back into the house.
4. Post-Jet Camera
Camera runs the same section again after jetting to confirm full clearance and check for any issues hidden behind the buildup.
5. Written Report
You get a summary of what was found, what was cleared, and recommendations if any structural issues need follow-up attention.
Protecting Old Pipes
Is Hydro Jetting Safe for Older Michigan Homes?
This is the most common question we get, and it deserves an honest answer. Southeast Michigan homes - particularly those built in the 1940s through 1980s in places like Livonia, Dearborn Heights, and the surrounding Wayne County communities - were built with cast-iron or clay sewer pipe that's now 40–80 years old.
The honest answer: hydro jetting on structurally compromised pipe carries real risk. That's exactly why we never jet without a camera inspection first. If the camera shows a pipe that's cracked, severely corroded, or has active joint separation, we won't jet it - we'll recommend the correct repair first. But for aging cast-iron pipe that the camera confirms is structurally sound - even heavily corroded pipe - jetting at calibrated pressure (1,500–2,000 PSI for old residential pipe) is safe and highly effective.
In fact, Michigan's freeze-thaw cycle creates root intrusion and grease buildup that makes hydro jetting particularly valuable here. Homes with older cast-iron lines benefit from periodic jetting the same way they benefit from HVAC servicing - as maintenance, not just emergency response.

Hydro Jetting FAQ
How does hydro jetting differ from drain snaking?
Snaking uses a mechanical cable to punch through or hook a blockage - it's effective for isolated clogs but leaves pipe wall coating intact. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water (1,500–4,000 PSI) to scour the full interior circumference of the pipe. It removes grease, scale, root debris, and mineral deposits from wall to wall. When jetting is done, the pipe interior is essentially clean. When snaking is done, the blockage is gone but the accumulation that caused it is often still there.
Can hydro jetting damage my pipes?
On structurally sound pipe - even old cast iron - properly calibrated hydro jetting is safe. The risk is jetting pipe that is already cracked, severely corroded, or has active joint separations. That's why we run a camera inspection first every time. If the camera shows compromised structure, we address that before jetting. If it shows aging but sound pipe, we calibrate pressure appropriately. The camera inspection is not optional - it's what makes jetting safe.
How often should we have my pipes hydro jetted?
For residential homes with newer PVC drain lines and no recurring issues, once every few years as preventive maintenance is sufficient. For homes with older cast-iron or clay pipes - particularly in Southeast Michigan where freeze-thaw cycles stress pipe joints and create root entry points - annual or biennial jetting is often appropriate. Commercial kitchens with FOG accumulation should be jetted at least annually, sometimes more frequently depending on volume.
Can hydro jetting remove tree roots?
Yes - hydro jetting with a rotary cutting nozzle is highly effective at shredding root mass and flushing root debris out of the line. However, jetting removes the roots that are currently in the pipe - it doesn't stop roots from coming back at the same entry points. After jetting, a camera inspection will show the entry locations, and we can discuss whether lining or patching those joint gaps makes sense to prevent re-intrusion.
How long does hydro jetting take?
Most residential hydro jetting jobs take 1–2 hours from start to finish, including the pre-jet camera inspection and post-jet camera verification. A heavily grease-coated commercial line may take 2–4 hours. We'll give you a realistic estimate on the phone before scheduling.
Is hydro jetting better than chemical drain cleaners?
There's no comparison. Chemical drain cleaners contain caustic lye that can soften PVC joints, accelerate corrosion in metal pipe, and create safety hazards when a plumber needs to work in the line after. They also don't remove wall-coating grease - they just partially dissolve the soft center of a clog temporarily. Hydro jetting removes everything from the pipe wall. It's the better option in every way, and it won't damage your pipes when done correctly.
Do we need hydro jetting or just a camera inspection first?
If you're experiencing recurring backups or suspect grease or root problems, we’ll typically recommend starting with a camera inspection to confirm what's there before committing to jetting. The camera determines whether jetting is the right tool or whether a different repair is needed first. In some cases, what looked like a grease problem turns out to be a structural issue that needs repair - not just cleaning. The camera inspection protects you from paying for the wrong fix.

REAL ESTATE & PREVENTIVE USE
Hydro Jetting for Home Sales, Purchases & Annual Maintenance
Pre-Listing Drain Cleaning
Selling your home? A professionally jetted sewer line - with a post-jet camera report - is a strong selling point. Buyers and their inspectors increasingly request sewer scopes. Having a clean, documented line eliminates a common negotiation point and protects your asking price.
Pre-Purchase Inspection
Buying a home built before 1990? A camera inspection and hydro jetting quote tells you exactly what you are getting into with the sewer line before you close. A $400 service can surface issues that save you $10,000–$20,000 in post-closing repairs.
Preventive Annual Maintenance
Homes with cast-iron or clay pipe over 40 years old benefit from periodic hydro jetting as preventive maintenance - the same way you service your HVAC. Jetting every 2–3 years keeps accumulation from reaching blockage level and extends the life of aging pipe.
